Yuan xiao, or the de facto Valentine’s Day for the Chinese, the fifteenth day of the lunar calender, the first full moon after Chinese new year, etc., means lots of lanterns and lights, no matter where you are.

In Hong Kong, we bought flowers, we bought Hui Chun (揮春) or Chun Tie (春貼) - the lucky messages in black on a red background. Ah ha, it’s the year of the Ox for the Vietnamese, Koreans, and many other Asians which include of course the Chinese. Only 5$CAD a piece for the Hui Chun, not a bad deal if it brings you prosperity for the rest of the year in times of uncertainty! Nouvel an lunaire est fêté parmi certains asiatiques comme les vietnamiens, les coréens, et bien sûr, les chinois. Les fleurs aux couleurs vivantes et les voeux écrits en noir sur un fond rouge - Hui Chun (揮春), soulignent ce marché-ci à Hong Kong. Selon les autorités chinoises, c’est le nombre de chinois (six fois la population du Canada, trois fois celle de la France) qui prennent le train vers chez eux pour la fête du printemps ou nouvel an lunaire (jour de l’an le 26 janvier 2009). Si vous n’êtes pas assez vernis, vous entrerez dans le train comme montré dans la tableau du peintre Sheng Qi. (Son exposition se trouve dans la charmante gallerie Andrew James Art au centre ville de Shanghai.) Billet en mains, je me comptais parmi les favorisés. À la gare Shanghai Sud, je me suis émerveillé par sa pavillon qui a l’air d’une aérogare. Ouf ! Cette heure de point dure 40 jours!

The unfortunate ones might have to jump on the trains as depicted in Sheng Qi’s work ”Catching train”, currently on exhibit at Andrew James Art in Shanghai. I was among the luckier ones who could marvel at the airport-like lobby of Shanghai South Railway Station, with a seat on the train home. This rush hour lasts 40 days!

Moomba Birdman Rally: Where man and bird (sub)merge

Melbourne is sending out the call for entrants in the Moomba Waterfest Birdman Rally, taking place on Sunday, 8 March 2009. They need people with ingenuity, imagination and a touch of insanity. The rally invites you to soar/plunge your way to (local) legendary status for the chance to win fantastic prizes.



Since it’s establishment in 1955, the festival has become something of an institution, unfolding in the city’s parks, along the streets and on the waters of the Yarra River. It holds the title of Australia’s largest free community festival

Montréal est gay. Pas juste “touche ma quéquette” gay, mais bien “amène tes amis pis viens nous rejoindre dans la ruelle qu’on s’amuse” gay. Considérée comme la San Francisco du Nord, Montréal et ses moeurs libérales est l’enceinte de plusieurs événements LGBT dont Divers/Cité et le Black and Blue. On oublie toutefois souvent Image + Nation, le festival de films Gay et Lesbien de Montréal, qui pourtant existe depuis maintenant 21 ans (bien avant que les droits des homosexuels et leur place dans la société québecoise et canadienne ne soient reconnus). D’abord perçu tel un ovni dans la scène culturelle montréalaise, le festival a lentement pris son envol pour devenir au fil des ans une institution de la communauté gay et culturelle de Montréal et du Canada.

Image + Nation aura donc lieu une nouvelle fois du 20 au 30 Novembre 2008 dans différentes salles de cinéma de Montréal, dont le Cinéma Impérial. Il faut noter la présence de Bruce LaBruce cette année au festival. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, Bruce est un cinéaste culte de la trempe des John Waters. Ses films, généralement controversés mais toujours divertissants, offrent un regard unique sur la communauté LGBT. Cette année, il présentera Otto, or Up with Dead People, un film de zombie tout à fait dans le ton de ses dernières productions. Cette projection aura lieu le 17 Novembre à l’Impérial.
