Bon aujourd’hui parlons cinéma… ou marketing … ou street art? comics ? alors … bon on va faire un mix de tout pour parler comme toujours des murs de nos villes, qui se couvrent de diverse peinture en rapport avec la sortie du film The Watchmen, tiré bien entendu du comics éponyme. Attention, il se pourrait que via cette article je relais lâchement un concept marketing imaginé entre deux orgie dans une agence de communication quelconque, en pleine période de sortie de film!

Mais qu’importe les motifs pour lesquels ces murs se sont trouvé décoré, le résultat n’en est pas moins là : New York, Toronto et d’autre ville se sont trouvé orné du slogan “Who watches the watchmen” en référence don à notre fameux film. Alors qui est dans le coup? les gens du marketing, un illustre fan de comics, le Watchmen en personne?

Les premier on l’air identique, même couleur, même typo … peut-être la fameux coup de marketing. Puis on commence à trouver différentes variantes :

La situation serait-elle hors de contrôle, le buzz aurais finalement pris (raaah saleté de pub, ils nous ont encore eu). Puis finalement on arrive a des mix avec les camera de Banksi (le thème s’y prêtait bien …) :

In Australia there are tons of milk crates all over the place and the crateman crew are becoming well known for making and positioning ‘crateman’ around different cities.

From the Crateman Crew:

“The Adelaide Fringe Festival commissioned us to design a float for their opening night parade, based on some of the work we have been doing with milk crates, and in particular the idea of ‘crateman’.

We were reluctant however to simply relocate our street based work into a radically different arena. Instead we were interested in the idea of a parade as being a cross between performance art, sculpture, and audience participation.

The crate sphere was designed to be rolled down the street as the final act in the parade. Comprising of 688 milk crates and being over 4.5 meters high, it had an estimated weight of over 700 kilograms. It was hoped that upon seeing us struggle with the beast, members of the audience would join in, and help us roll the sphere to a glorious end!

Unfortunately the reality was somewhat different.

People in their curiosity came closer and closer to the ball - but were reluctant to get involved and help, or move out of its way when it threatened to crush them. Our cries of distress were misinterpreted as part of the ‘theatre’ of the situation, as we struggled to maintain control. After completing about a quarter of the parade route, the organizers and the police decided to pull the plug, and ordered us to stop the ball.

It was rolled to the side of the street, and left to sit in a ‘no parking’ zone. Here it sat for a day or so, puzzling passers by, a strange visitor to the quaint streets of Adelaide.”

While Montreallers are enjoying a fresh round of snowfall, the flip side, Australia is still roasting hot. People have probably heard about the horrific fires that are happening around Melbourne at the moment, Perth and Adelaide have been scorching in the heat also. Temperatures have been up over 40ºC (110ºF) for days on end and this street art was spotted (artist unknown) in the suburbs of Adelaide. Guess no ice-cream means hitting the beach instead.

Le concept de Cityspk est né d’un amour inconditionnel pour la typographie urbaine qui nous entoure. Il suffit de mettre le nez dehors pour être plongé dans un univers de mots et de lettres, certains fonctionnels, d’autres politiques. Cet amour de la typographie s’étend aussi à Flickr, où plusieurs groupes de fidèles échangent et partagent leurs trouvailles urbaines. Voici donc un aperçu de la diversité visuelle et typographique des multiples groupes de Flickr.

Typography and Lettering

Ce groupe très actif comporte plus de 8000 membres et 49000 différentes photos. Sans être spécifiquement réservé à la typographie urbaine, ce groupe comporte néanmoins de très intéressantes images à explorer.

Faded Signage (FADED!)

Faded Signage est un de mes groupes spécialisés favori sur Flickr. Comme son nom l’indique, les photos incluses ici représentent toutes des signes, écriteaux, pancartes et autres artéfacts urbains qui ont été détériorés par le temps. Montréal, avec ses publicités et enseignes peintent à même les murs de pierres est bien garnie de typographie travaillées par le temps. Le groupe est également bien modéré par ses administrateurs.

The Center for Vernacular Typography

Le groupe intitulé The Center for Vernacular Typography, bien que d’une ampleur réduite, comporte des trésors de typographie locale. Vos enseignes du camping St-Lin se trouveraient dans une situation des plus comfortables entourées par ces autres trouvailles vernaculaires fascinantes.

Urban Markup Language

Ce groupe ne s’attarde pas autant à la typographie urbaine qu’aux marques laissées dans nos environnements urbains. Une entrée de gaz ici, une indication d’égoût là. Nos villes sont codées quotidiennement, et ce groupe en effectue le recensement. Fascinant!

Yuan xiao, or the de facto Valentine’s Day for the Chinese, the fifteenth day of the lunar calender, the first full moon after Chinese new year, etc., means lots of lanterns and lights, no matter where you are.

La quinzieme journée du nouvel an chinois, aussi la première lune complète visible, égale la St-Valentin pour les chinois, où les lanternes s’affichent partout.

Continuing but twisting the theme on Valentine started here, whoever sketched this piece “我愛北角” (wo ai bei jiao) inside a metro station, loves North Point (北角), a neighbourhood in the Northeastern part of Hong Kong Island.

ai (愛): verb or noun, meaning like or love.

I’ve read about Slinkachu all over the place lately, the New Zealand Review, Asphalt magazine from Germany, he was even in the London Financial Times, strangely. He is a Londoner, whose work is becoming ever popular. Spreading smaller words than most, but in a highly effective manner…
